Legal Resources - Repetitive strain injury

Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) is a collective term used to describe a number of medical conditions caused by repeated use of a particular joint in the body, usually during the course of employment. Another term sometimes used to describe certain of these conditions is Work Related Upper Limb Disorder (WRULD).

This type of injury occurs when the same movement of the same joint is repeated over a period and causes damage to muscles, nerves, tendons and other tissue. There are many separate medical conditions such as tenosynovitis, tendinitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, writers cramp, tennis elbow.

The condition may occur in upper or lower limb depending on the nature of the activity which has caused the injury. Areas commonly affected are wrists, hands, fingers, elbows, shoulders, neck, back. Symptoms can include numbness, tingling, pain, discomfort, burning or coldness, restricted movement, weakened grip. Depending on the severity of the injury the condition can affect both personal life and quite possibly employment.

This condition has become a major source of claims over recent years not only in heavy industry but in other areas because of the increasing use of computer keyboards.
