When you lose a loved one it goes without saying that it is a hammer blow and it is difficult to concentrate on dealing with the matters that have to be dealt with. You first need to speak an undertaker and, if the estate is worth more than £5,000, a solicitor to help you administer the estate. Many people find it difficult to ask how much they will charge for their professional services. Some months later they wish they had asked.
Solicitors don’t help because they won’t tell you how much the final bill will be until months later. They say they charge for time spent at so much per hour, so much for each letter, so much for each telephone call and then a percentage of the estate on top. This makes it difficult for even lawyers to guess how much the bill will be so it is virtually impossible for a client to guess. We are attempting to overcome the uncertainty. We do this by charging 1.0% of the value of the estate plus VAT.

This includes obtaining grant of probate or letters of administration, dealing with the Inland Revenue, gathering in the estate, paying the estate's bills and distributing the money to the beneficiaries. These fees do not apply if the estate is contested (this means simply if someone disputes the will). If a house has to be sold our normal conveyancing charges apply in addition it does not include tracing lost beneficiaries.
